What is online traffic school?
Online traffic school is an approved driver safety course you complete on the internet instead of in a classroom. Courts and state agencies offer it to drivers who received a traffic ticket, and many drivers take it to keep a point off their driving record, have a citation dismissed, or meet a court order.
The course covers traffic laws, defensive driving and safe habits behind the wheel. You study at your own pace, answer short quizzes along the way and finish with a final exam. Everything is done online, on any device, in English or Spanish.
Depending on your state, the course may be called traffic school, defensive driving, a driver improvement course or a traffic safety course. The goal is the same: finish an approved course and take care of your ticket.
Common reasons drivers take traffic school
- Keep a point off your driving record
- Have a traffic ticket dismissed where allowed
- Complete a court-ordered driving course
- Reduce points already on your record
- Qualify for an auto insurance discount where offered

Online traffic school FAQ
How soon before my due date should I enroll?
We recommend enrolling at least 2 weeks before your court due date. You can complete the course at your own pace, but your deadline also needs to cover the steps after you finish: processing your completion, reporting it to the court, and any unexpected delays such as a busy work week, technical issues, or needing to retake the final exam. Waiting until the last few days puts you at risk of missing your deadline, and only the court can grant an extension. Check your court notice for your exact due date, and contact the court directly if you have questions about it.
How soon before my California court due date should I enroll?
We recommend enrolling at least 2 weeks before the due date your California court gave you. The 8-hour course can be completed at your own pace, but after you pass, your completion has to be processed and reported electronically so the court can confirm it before your deadline. Leaving extra time also protects you from unexpected delays such as technical issues or needing to retake the final exam. If you miss your due date, only the court can grant an extension, so check your court notice for the exact date and contact the court directly with any questions.
